Main Business
The City of Grenoble is an urban area in the middle of three chains of
mountains in the Alpes (S.E. France). It counts 154000 inhabitants (375
000 in the agglomeration).
Grenoble is known for its universities : its 4 universities and 8 engineering
schools gather more than 55.000 students. It is also a research site par
excellence, as it is the second research site after Paris in France. Diverse
disciplines are highly developed : from physics, chemistry and applied
mathematics to nuclear, electronics, micro-electronics, artificial intelligence,
bio-technologies, etc.
Many Europea and world-wide known research structures are established
in Grenoble, counting 15.000 researchers, such as the CEA (Commissariat
à l'Energie Atomique), the CNRS (Centre National de Recherche scientifique),
the CENT (Centre National d'Etudes des Télécommunications),
the INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique),
etc.
Thanks to the 30 international companies and the 12.000 small and medium-sized
companies implanted in the area, Grenoble is also a place where the tertiary
sector is well represented.
Grenoble is very active in the cultural field, with important socio-cultural
structures (like a national renowned museum) and more than 150 associations.
Considering all these elements, the City of Grenoble offers a large scale
and various samples of population.
Expertise and experience of the organisation
The City Council of Grenoble, is a local public authority, the level
of administration closest to the population.
It deals with all the aspects of a local authority's competencies in France
aiming at ruling the city and its citizens. The City Council of Grenoble's
main departments which implement the policies and organize life in the
cityinclude the Human Resources and the General Means of the city council
(the Information systems Direction belongs to this department) ; the Finance
and Economic Development Department, the Socio-Cultural Department, the
Solidarity Department and the Urban Department. Grenoble has participated
in several international projects.
Activities in ELBA
Grenoble is a partner of the project and participates in nearly all work-packages,
especially the user-related WTs. It will work closely with Hervé
Consultants and the scientific researchers to constitute the user groups,
and offer the city's infrastructure in order to implement the objectives
of the user-related WTs.
